Frederick was born in Innsbruck on October 21, 1415. From 1424 he was Duke of Styria and Carinthia as Frederick V. In 1440 he was elected king and in succession to his brother Emperor Albert II, but only replaced him in 1451. He was the last emperor to be crowned in Rome (1452). In 1457 his nephew Ladislas died and he inherited Upper and Lower Austria; however, he lost Vienna and Lower Austria to the troops of Mathias Corvin, King of Hungary. He married his son Maximilien to Marie de Bourgogne, daughter of Charles the Bold and died in Linz on August 19, 1493..
