The Danish colonies in India were established by the Danish East India Company. The capital of the Danish colonies was Fort Dansborg, at Tranquebar, founded in 1620. In 1779, the Company ceded its possessions to the government, and they became colonies of the Danish crown. At the beginning of the 19th century the British attacked the Danish ships, and ruined the market of the Danish East India Company. The Danish colonies declined, eventually being absorbed by British India.
