Leptis Magna was founded in the 7th century BC by Phoenician settlers from Sidon. Passed under the influence of Carthage from the 4th century BC, it followed the destiny of its metropolis. Conquered after 146 BC, it enjoyed a certain autonomy until the reign of Tiberius, who incorporated the city into the province of Africa.
