Coffret en cuir et métal, avec un monogramme en cuivre doré “GR” sur le haut du couvercle, servant à ranger une dizaine de tubes de louis de 20 francs en métal (laiton) recouvert de cuir, soit l’équivalent de 10.000 Francs.
L’intérieur du couvercle est couvert de soie bordeaux avec la mention en lettres dorées de l’éditeur : BOUDET / 143 et 144 / PALAIS ROYAL.
La charnière fonctionne bien mais le système de fermeture ne semble pas fonctionner correctement.
La base de la boîte présente quatre petits clous aux quatre coins permettant à la boîte de ne pas reposer directement sur le cuir. il semble que deux clous soit manquant au centre des petits côtés.
Le cuir, dans son ensemble, est dans un état relativement correct.
L’intérieur est composé d’une dizaine de compartiments, recouvert de feutrine de velours violet, recevant ainsi la dizaine de tubes en laiton recouvert de cuir marron et bordeaux.

The hinge works well, but the locking mechanism does not appear to function correctly. The base of the box has four small nails at the four corners, preventing it from resting directly on the leather. It appears that two nails are missing from the center of the short sides. The leather, as a whole, is in relatively good condition. The interior consists of about ten compartments, lined with purple velvet felt, which hold the ten brass tubes covered in brown and burgundy leather.

From the Middle Ages until the middle of the 19th century, deniers, écus, and then the first francs and centimes, were carried in purses, alms pouches, or small leather change purses, often attached to the belt. When, in the second half of the 19th century, the Second Empire put into circulation more than one hundred million 20-franc gold coins minted with the image of Louis Napoleon III, it was necessary to create a safe and practical system for storing and individually transporting these precious coins. The craftsmen imagined the manufacture of a sort of coin box, which took the name of coin box, then gold holder, and quickly transformed into Louis holder, the first name of the Emperor, but also a reminder of the first gold Louis created at the end of the reign of Louis XIII in 1641.
