Overseas territory in 1946, Guinea asked for its independence in 1958 under the leadership of Sekou Touré. Deprived of any assistance by France, it turned to the Soviet Union and China and established a dictatorial regime of socialist inspiration. The economy, subject to a collectivist regime, is deteriorating rapidly and poverty pushes about two million Guineans to flee to neighboring countries. In 1978, Sekou Touré, faced with this failure, liberalized the country and resumed relations with France. On his death, the army took power in 1984 but democratization took place from 1990 with the multiparty system and the granting of a Constitution.
