Peintre, écrivain et architecte, Giorgio Vasari est célèbre pour ses biographies d'artistes italiens. Il est ainsi l’auteur d’un des ouvrages fondateurs de l’histoire de l’Art “Le Vite de' più eccellenti pittori, scultori e architettori” (Les Vies des meilleurs peintres, sculpteurs et architectes).
Le tableau choisi par la Monnaie de Saint-Marin pour illustrer son oeuvre de peintre est « Oloferne Giuditta DeCapita » (Judith décapitant Holopherne), aujourd’hui conservé à l’ Art Museum de Saint-Louis
