Between 1466 and 1793, Gdansk was a free city in the Polish Kingdom, although the city had a predominantly German population. Then, Danzig became the capital of West Prussia until 1920, with a brief interruption under Napoleon between 1807 and 1813. The Treaty of Versailles following the First World War made Gdansk the Free City of Danzig, under the control of the League of Nations (1920). In September 1939, the Second World War begins with the bombardment of the Westerplatte fortress, then Danzig is attached to Germany.
