ALSACE - SIEGE OF BRISACH by the Sweedish
(1633)
Brisach, since the start of the Thirty Years War, was one of the workshops of the Landgraviat of Haute-Alsace, of Archduke Ferdinand (1620-1632) in particular. Louis XIII and Richelieu were trying to create a second front in Europe to take the Habsburgs from behind. France allied itself with Sweden and Gustave-Adolphe II who, before dying at Lutzen in 1632, led a brilliant campaign in Germany. In 1633, the town of Brisach was besieged by the Swedes, led by the Margrave of Baden. The city was delivered by the Spanish general, the Duke of Feria.
