Ce type avec l’oiseau posé sur une croix, parfois confondu avec des monnaies continentales, est assez commun ; il en existe surtout un grand nombre de variantes.
Cet exemplaire, avec les quatre annelets autour de la croix au revers, ne correspond précisément à aucune des monnaies d’Oxford. Ce serait la caractéristique de la variété BID, cf. Metcalf, vol. I, page 98.
La légende du droit est difficile à interpréter, probablement une dégénérescence géométrique (?).
This type with the bird perched on a cross, sometimes confused with continental coins, is quite common; there are, above all, a large number of variants. This example, with the four annulets around the cross on the reverse, does not correspond precisely to any of the Oxford coins. This would be the characteristic of the BID variety, cf. Metcalf, vol. I, page 98. The legend on the obverse is difficult to interpret, probably a geometric degeneration (?)

(7th - 8th centuries)
If the minting of these coins is to be located at the beginning of the 8th century, in Great Britain, it is not exceptional to find them in Gaul. They are often confused with Merovingian silver coins (cf. MONNAIES XIX, n° 503, sceattas c. 680-710, classified in Merovingian denier of Laon). During the 8th century, the style of these pieces is more and more degenerated, they are often in ridge or filled. These coins disappeared from circulation in the second half of the 8th century.
