AQUITAINE - duchy of Aquitaine - Richard the Lionheart
Richard the Lion Heart is the second son of Henry II and Eleanor of Aquitaine. From 1175, with the help of Louis VII of France, he rebelled against his brothers with their father. Became heir to the kingdom after the death of his brother Henry in 1183, he succeeded his father in 1189 and spent ten years of his reign waging war in the Holy Land and in France. He participated in the Third Crusade and almost retake Jerusalem. He dealt with Saladin. In return, a prisoner in Austria, he spent two years captive. Married Berengaria of Navarre, daughter of Sancho VI, who never set foot in England, he had no child. He died by the siege of the fortress of Chalus in 1199. He was buried at the Abbey of Fontevraud like her mother, Eleanor, five years later.
