Sur huit exemplaires de l’année 215, quatre proviennent du trésor de Bithynie (IGCH. 1384) découvert en 1928 qui aurait contenu plus de 54 monnaies d’argent dont 22 tétradrachmes bithyniens dont quatre pour l’an 215 et le nôtre. Le trésor aurait été enfoui vers 75 avant. J.-C. Notre exemplaire est illustré dans l’article de P. Pollack, MN. 16, 1979, p. 45-56, pl. 11, n° 36 et il est de même coin de droit (A/233) qu’un autre exemplaire du trésor bithynien, P. Pollack, MN. 16, 1979, pl. 11, n° 35. Mêmes coins que l’exemplaire de la vente Kölner Münzkabinett, 36, 16-17 avril 1984, n° 35.
Of the eight examples from the year 215, four come from the Bithynia hoard (IGCH. 1384) discovered in 1928, which is said to have contained more than 54 silver coins, including 22 Bithynian tetradrachms, four of which are for the year 215 and our own. The hoard is said to have been buried around 75 BC. Our example is illustrated in the article by P. Pollack, MN. 16, 1979, pp. 45-56, pl. 11, no. 36, and it has the same obverse die (A/233) as another example from the Bithynian hoard, P. Pollack, MN. 16, 1979, pl. 11, No. 35. BITHYNIA - BITHYNIAN KINGDOM - NICOMEDES IV PHILOPATOR
(94-74 BC)
Nicomedes IV succeeded his father Nicomedes III. Nicomedes IV married Nysa, daughter of Ariarathes VI of Cappadocia and niece of Mithridates VI of Pontus. He had to face the usurpation of his half-brother Socrates Chrestos between 93-92 and 89-88 BC supported by Mithridates VI Eupator (120-63 BC). In reality, with the support of the Bithynians, Socrates Chrestos seized the throne twice, the second after the Pontic victory of Amnias in the summer of 89 BC which forced Nicomedes IV to flee and to go to Rome for help. Finally the usurper was eliminated in the fall of 88 BC by his protector. After a reign of twenty years without relief, he died childless leaving as heir, Rome which finally annexed the Kingdom..
