BOURGES AND THE BERRY

This province which formed the departments of Indre and Cher had for capital Bourges, Avaricum of the Romans and country of Bituriges Cubi Celtic previously. A hereditary county in the Carolingian era, Berry was sold in 1101 to Philip I. The title of Duke of Berry was still worn in the 18th century by the future Louis XVI and in the 19th century by Ferdinand, son of Charles X..
