评论

Same dies as the American Numismatic Society copy (ANS. No. 369). Same obverse die as the American Numismatic Society copy (ANS. No. 370). Significant die break on the reverse, in the left field on the ethnic. The authors of HN Italy are the only ones to report that the eagle has its talons closed on a hare (HN Italy No. 2175, p. 172). Seems much rarer than general works suggest

BRUTTIUM - CROTON

(4th-3rd century BC)

Crotone is an Achaean colony founded in 710 BC Under the leadership of Milon, the Crotoniates captured Sybaris and destroyed it. In the following century, following internal struggles, the city declined before falling into the hands of Dionysius of Syracuse in 378 BC, then Agathokles in 296 BC and finally between those of Pyrrhus in 277 BCE. It was conquered by the Romans during the Second Punic War after the Battle of Cannae in 216 BC.
