Ce type de denier est exceptionnel et encore mal connu à cause de sa rareté. Recensé dans le Supplément du Nouvel Atlas, les auteurs précisent à son sujet que “plusieurs exemplaires de ce type fruste, de facture malhabile, proviennent des proches environs d’Etretat (Seine-Maritime)”.
J.-M. Doyen a récemment publié tous les exemplaires connus jusqu’alors, avec une tentative de classement (cf. BCEN).
Le type de droit, très énigmatique, a été interprété dans le Nouvel Atlas comme un aigle très stylisé de face. Selon d’autres, il pourrait s’agir d’une ancre accostée de deux hameçons (?).

Listed in the Supplement to the New Atlas, the authors specify about it that “several examples of this crude type, of clumsy construction, come from the near surroundings of Etretat (Seine-Maritime)”. J.-M. Doyen recently published all the examples known to date, with an attempt at classification (see BCEN). The type of right, very enigmatic, was interpreted in the New Atlas as a very stylized eagle facing forward. According to others, it could be an anchor attached to two hooks (?)

GALLIA - CALETI (Area of Pays de Caux)

The Calètes, people of Belgium, were sometimes considered Armoricans. They occupied part of the current department of Seine-Maritime with the countries of Caux and Bray. Their neighbors were the Véliocasses, the Bellovaques, of whom they were clients, and the Ambiens. The Calètes would have provided a contingent of ten thousand men to the Belgian coalition under the leadership of the Bellovaques in 57 BC. In 52 BC, they participated with the seven Armorican peoples in sending twenty thousand men for the relief army, destined to deliver Alesia. In 51 BC, they took part in the revolt of the Belgian peoples, led by the Bellovaci. Two of their main oppida were in Bracquemont and Fécamp. In Roman times, their capital was Juliobona, Lillebonne.
