Charles (1337-1380) is the eldest son of Jean II le Bon and Judith of Luxembourg. He married Jeanne de Bourbon in 1350 (1338-1377). Regent during his father's captivity in England (1356-1360 and 1363-1364), he became king on his death in 1364. He defeated Charles the Bad, King of Navarre, at Cocherel thanks to Du Guesclin and signed peace in 1365. He put an end to the war of succession of Brittany after the death of Charles de Blois, killed at the battle of Auray on September 29, 1364. Charles signed peace with Jean IV, on April 12, 1365. In 1369, the war resumed with the English after the confiscation of Guyenne. The King reconquered Rouergue, Quercy and Périgord in 1369, Limousin and Poitou in 1372, Aunis and Saintonge in 1373. On his death in 1380, the English only owned Guyenne and Calais. Charles V reorganizes the army, now made up of companies, and restores the royal finances. King builder, he built the Louvre, the Bastille and the Hôtel Saint-Pol. He is also a fine scholar.
