Le 21 septembre 1792, les députés de la Convention, réunis pour la première fois, décident à l'unanimité de l'abolition de la monarchie constitutionnelle en France.
Bien que la République n'ait jamais été officiellement proclamée, le 22 septembre 1792, la décision est prise de dater les actes de l'an I de la République. Le 25 septembre 1792, la République est déclarée « une et indivisible ».

On September 21, 1792, the deputies of the National Convention, meeting for the first time, unanimously decided to abolish the constitutional monarchy in France. The Fifth Republic, whose constitution was approved by referendum on September 28, 1958 by more than 79% of French people, only officially began with the installation of General de Gaulle as president on January 8, 1959. The constitution was amended on January 28, 1958. October 1962 by referendum where a majority of 62% of votes approves the election of the President of the Republic by direct universal suffrage.
