CONSTANTINE VII and ROMANUS I
(17/12/920-16/12/944)
Constantin VII was born in 905 in the purple which his nickname recalls (Porphyrogenete). He was the son of Leo VI and Zoé and was associated with the throne on May 15, 908. His uncle Alexander succeeded his brother (912-913). Emperor in 913, the regency was exercised by the patriarch Nicolas Mysticus, from 914 by Zoé, then from 920 by Romain I Lacépène; he will not reign alone until 944. Roman I, associated with the empire since 920, was deposed by his two surviving sons, Stephen and Constantine, on December 16, 944. The two co-emperors were in turn eliminated by Constantin VII on January 27, 945. The son of Leo VI then reigned alone for the first time since 913. On April 6, 945, he joined his son, Roman II, who succeeded him on his death and reigned until the year 963.
