Corinth became one of the most important cities of Greece by controlling militarily and economically the Isthmus of the same name. Founded by the Aeolian, Corinth was located between central Greece and the Peloponnese. It is the motherland of many cities, Corinthian colonies, including Syracuse, Corcyra, Ambracia, Anactorium and Leucas. During the Peloponnesian War (431-404 AC.) it was, with Sparta, one of the most implacable enemies of Athens. Corinth succeeded in maintaining its independence against the suffocating domination of the Macedonians.
