In 1775, his brother Sahib II Giray, khan of Crimea, was driven from power by Devlet IV Giray. In 1777, Russian agents caused the overthrow of the khan and his replacement by his cousin Chahin, brother of his predecessor, who was by his father Ahmed a grandson of Devlet II Giray.
