Charles, born in 1403, is the fifth son of Charles VI and Isabella of Bavaria. He is declared dauphin after the death of his other brothers. On June 14, 1417, Charles VI appointed him lieutenant of the kingdom. After the capture of Paris on May 29, 1418, he moved to Bourges and was appointed regent on October 26, 1418.
