DOBUNNI (Aera of Cirencester)

(1st century BC)

The territory of the Dobunni was located between the Bristol Channel and the Severn on the present counties of Somerset, Gloucestershire, Avon of Worcestershire. Archeology reveals important traces of fortifications including that of Minchinhampton which extends over 240 hectares. Their capital seems to have been the site of Bagendon, near Cirencester, known by the Roman name of "Corinium Dobunnorum". Their main neighbors were the Silures to the west, the Cornovii to the north, the Catuvellauni to the east and the Atrebates to the south. Their economy was based on agriculture and crafts. The Dobunni are also known for their gold and silver coinage (issues of royal dynasties), dated to the 1st century BC. J.-C. whose origin would be among their neighbors Atrébates.
