At the heart of the Ottoman Empire, the reform policy led by King Muhammad Bey (1855-1859) was continued and amplified by his successor, Abdul-Medjîd (Abdülmecid, 1839-1861). This is the era of tanzimât, liberal reforms in the legislative, administrative and educational fields, as well as with regard to the status of minorities. The most important of these reforms was enacted in 1856, under pressure from the European powers. The empire suffers blow after blow at the same time, gradually losing whole sections of its vast domain.
