ESSEQUIBO AND DEMERARY

Essequibo and Demerara is a Dutch colony founded in 1616 on the northeast coast of South America. In 1782-1783, it was briefly occupied by the French before being returned to the Dutch West India Company. From 1796, it was occupied by the English. In 1814, it became a British colony. In 1831, it was attached to the colony of Berbice to form British Guiana.
