James Abram Garfield (1831-1881) est le 20e président des États-Unis d’Amérique. Professeur en lettres classiques, il devient avocat. Pendant la guerre civile, il contribue aux côtes des troupes fédérales à repousser les forces confédérées du Kentucky. Dès 1862, il siège au congrès de l’Ohio. En 1880, alors qu’il brigue un poste de sénateur au congrès des États-Unis, il obtient suite à des divisions internes l’investiture républicaine pour les élections présidentielles. Élu le 2 novembre 1880, il entre en fonction le 4 mars 1881. Il est assassiné le 19 septembre 1881. Le vice-président, Chester Alan Arthur lui succède..

A professor of classics, he became a lawyer. During the Civil War, he contributed to the Federal troops repelling the Confederate forces in Kentucky. From 1862, he sat in the Ohio Congress. In 1880, while running for a position as Senator in the United States Congress, he obtained the Republican nomination for the presidential elections following internal divisions. Elected on November 2, 1880, he took office on March 4, 1881. He was assassinated on September 19, 1881. Vice President Chester Alan Arthur succeeded him.
