Le revers fait allusion à la prise de Besançon par les troupes françaises en 1674. La cité avait déjà été conquise en 1668 et rendue aux Espagnols après la Paix d'Aix-la-Chapelle. Le traité de Nimègue entérina le rattachement de la Franche-Comté et de Besançon au royaume. En 1694, un atelier monétaire royal sera ouvert dans la cité bisontine.
