Loué par Voltaire, ce grand financier prit sa charge alors que l'Etat avait accumulé deux milliards de livres de dettes. Il réussit à rétablir le crédit grâce aux prêts du banquier Samuel Bernard mais fut destitué par le Régent à la mort de Louis XIV. Digne émule de son oncle Colbert, ses successeurs le firent regretter.
