Since the Treaty of Paris in 1763, France had lost its privileges and possessions in the Indian subcontinent, except for seven counters. The administration of the colony was entrusted to the Oriental Company of India (EIC) until 1858, date of the revolt of the sepoys, auxiliary soldiers of the Indian army. Authority was then vested in the British crown. The colony's coinage began in 1835 for William IV, King of Great Britain. Guillaume IV (21/07/1765-20/06/1837), second son of George III and Charlotte of Mecklenburg, succeeded his brother in 1830. He married Adelaide of Saxe-Meiningen (1792-1849) but they did not had no children and it was his niece Victoria I who succeeded him in 1837.
