Madras fut fondé en 1639 et le Fort Saint-George sur la côte en 1641. L'atelier fut d'abord installé dans le fort. En 1742, La Compagnie des Indes Orientales obtint le droit de faire fabriquer des ruppes. La Pagode valait entre 36 et 45 fannam ou 3,5 ruppes.
