On September 21, 1746, Mahé de La Bourdonnais seized Madras. The English besieged Pondicherry without success in October 1748. At the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle, the French returned Madras. From 1752, France suffered several setbacks in India where the English imposed themselves. In October 1754, Dupleix, who was governor in India, was recalled and disgraced.
