In 1281, he was created cardinal-deacon. He was elected pope on December 24, 1294 when he was 78 years old and consecrated on the following January 24. In 1297, he canonized King Louis IX of France. In 1303, Boniface excommunicates the king of France. He died in Rome on October 11, 1303..
