Ce jeton fut frappé pour commémorer la naissance du dauphin, le 11 novembre 1781, probablement sur demande de la ville de Strasbourg dont le lis de type florentin est repris au revers de cet exemplaire.

Louis-Joseph is the first child of Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette. He was born on October 21, 1781 in Versailles but died when he was not yet eight years old. His brother, better known as Louis XVII, then took the title of Dauphin.
