Revers signé de Clair Jacquemin. La famille de Neufville de Villeroy d’Alincourt porte d’azur au chevron d’or accompagné de trois croisettes ancrées du même. François de Neufville, duc de Villeroy est le fils du maréchal Nicolas de Villeroy. Élevé avec Louis XIV, il obtint les plus hauts commandements. Gouverneur et lieutenant général du Lyonnais en survivance de son père, il est blessé à la bataille de Saint-Gotthard. En Flandre puis dans l’armée du Rhin, il prend part à de nombreuses batailles. Maréchal en 1693, il reçoit en 1695 le commandement de l’armée du maréchal de Luxembourg. Prisonnier en 1702 du prince Eugène, il subit un nouveau revers en 1706 en se retirant sur Lille tout en laissant les places de Flandres aux alliés. Louis XIV ne lui tint pas rigueur de son incapacité mais il se retira des affaires militaires et devint chef du conseil royal des finances puis gouverneur de Louis XV et membre du conseil de Régence. Il meurt à Paris en 1730.

François de Neufville, Duke of Villeroy, is the son of Marshal Nicolas de Villeroy. Raised with Louis XIV, he obtained the highest commands. Governor and lieutenant general of Lyonnais in his father's heirloom, he was wounded at the Battle of Saint-Gotthard. In Flanders and then in the Army of the Rhine, he took part in numerous battles. Marshal in 1693, he received command of the army of Marshal Luxembourg in 1695. Prisoner in 1702 by Prince Eugène, he suffered a new setback in 1706 by retreating to Lille while leaving the fortresses of Flanders to the allies. Louis XIV did not hold his incapacity against him, but he withdrew from military affairs and became head of the royal council of finance, then governor of Louis XV and a member of the Regency Council. He died in Paris in 1730.

LYONNAIS (GOVERNORS OF)
The governments, military and political divisions of the kingdom were twelve in number in the 16th century, they were thirty-nine in 1776, of which eighteen were first class (Picardy, Flanders, Normandy, Lorraine, Burgundy, etc.) and twenty-one second class (Boulonnais, Artois, Berry, Auvergne, etc.). The governors, important figures during the Wars of Religion and sometimes dangerous rivals of power, saw their powers diminished by royalty, in particular by Henri IV or by Richelieu. Louis XIV reduced their exercise to three years and left them only honors, while the intendants exercised the reality of power in the field. The governments nevertheless continued to be transmitted in the great families: Condé in Burgundy, Luxembourg in Normandy, etc..
