The Compagnie des Salines de l'Est is the privatization of the royal saltworks of Arc et Senan. The profitability of the saltworks collapsed with the arrival of the railway and therefore sea salt transported at an increasingly low price. The company did not leave a very good local memory having violently opposed (dynamiting certain buildings) the classification of the architectural ensemble as a protected historical monument in 1926. Today the site is part of the UNESCO World Heritage, see http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saline_royale_d%27Arc-et-Senans
