Through his mother Philippa de Guelders, Antoine de Lorraine could claim the succession of Charles d'Egmont who had been executed in 1538. Charles-Quint placed Guillaume II de Juliers on the vacant seat before claiming for himself the Duchy of Guelders in 1543. Charles-Quint, King of Spain, Count of Flanders, Duke of Brabant, Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire was France's irreconcilable enemy, whom he tried to stifle politically and geographically. He had to fight for more than 40 years against François Ier and Henri II.
