NETHERLANDS - BISHOPRIC OF UTRECHT - DAVID OF BURGUNDY
(1456-1496)
The episcopate of David of Burgundy is inserted between that of Rodolphe de Diepholt (1426/1433-1455) and that of Frédéric de Bade (1496-1517). The complex story of the bishopric is intertwined with the end of the feud that has torn Christianity apart since 1378, the Great Schism. It was the election of Martin V (1417-1431) that finally put an end to this schism. The very long episcopate of David of Burgundy was marred by the election of a counter-bishop in 1481, Engelbert of Cleves. The secession ended in 1483.
