La Compagnie des Quatre Canaux est une société créée en 1821 qui a réalisé plusieurs canaux importants du centre et de l’ouest de la France.
En 1820, le directeur des Ponts et Chaussées Becquey a remis au roi Louis XVIII un rapport sur les voies navigables. Se référant à des travaux français antérieurs, ainsi qu’aux ambitieux projets américains et britanniques, Becquey préconise la création de 10 000 km de voies navigables en France avant 1840.
Manquant de fonds pour mener une politique ambitieuse dans ce domaine, le gouvernement opte pour des concessions, qu’il accorde en 1821 et 1822. La compagnie André Cottier des banquiers parisiens Dominique André et François Cottier a obtenu les quatre concessions suivantes :
* Nantes à Brest, Lorient et Dinan (Canal de Bretagne) – concessions obtenue en association avec d’autres industriels et banquiers, dont Jacques Laffite
* Digoin à Decize et Auxerre (Canal du Nivernais)
* Digoin à Briare (Canal latéral à la Loire)
* Canal du Berry
La compagnie André Cottier a fusionné ses intérêts pour créer la Compagnie des Quatre Canaux. Celle-ci a été constituée en société anonyme en 1823, avec ses actions cotées à la Bourse de Paris. Elle fait partie des trois sociétés créées à cette époque, avec la Compagnie des Trois Canaux et la Compagnie d’Orléans.

The French Monarchy had long cherished the project of ensuring the construction of thoroughfares which usually fell within the competence of local authorities, provinces, lords or communities.. For essentially financial reasons, the project only really came to fruition in 1716 with the creation of a hierarchical corps, on the model of the corps of military engineers, responsible for the fortifications, which had been organized some twenty-five years earlier.. Initially, the corps des Ponts et Chaussées comprised an inspector general, an architect first engineer, three inspectors general and twenty-one engineers, who had to design and build roads and engineering structures with sub-engineers recruited by their care. The task entrusted to them corresponds to a significant shift in the priorities of the State. In 1716, Louis XIV had been dead for almost a year, leaving France exhausted from long years of war. Concerns of military grandeur are almost immediately followed by the pursuit of economic power which must be achieved by facilitating trade through more and safer transportation infrastructure.. Offering more ramified service possibilities than rivers and canals, roads will be the subject of repeated investments by the State, allowing bridge engineers to appear as the privileged servants of its economic plans..
