Pour sa huitième pièce de 2 Euro commémorative, la République de Saint-Marin célèbre le 500ème anniversaire de la naissance de Giorgio Vasari (1511-1574).
Peintre, écrivain et architecte, Giorgio Vasari est célèbre pour ses biographies d'artistes italiens. Il est ainsi l’auteur d’un des ouvrages fondateurs de l’histoire de l’Art “Le Vite de' più eccellenti pittori, scultori e architettori” (Les Vies des meilleurs peintres, sculpteurs et architectes).
Le tableau choisi par la Monnaie de Saint-Marin pour illustrer son oeuvre de peintre est « Oloferne Giuditta DeCapita » (Judith décapitant Holopherne), aujourd’hui conservé à l’ Art Museum de Saint-Louis.

With its eighth commemorative 2 Euro coin, the Republic of San Marino celebrates the 500th anniversary of the birth of Giorgio Vasari (1511-1574). Painter, writer, and architect, Giorgio Vasari is famous for his biographies of Italian artists. He is also the author of one of the founding works of art history, “Le Vite de' più eccellenti pittori, scultori e architettori” (The Lives of the Best Painters, Sculptors, and Architects). The painting chosen by the San Marino Mint to illustrate his work as a painter is “Oloferne Giuditta DeCapita” (Judith Beheading Holofernes), now housed at the Art Museum of Saint-Louis.

SAN MARINO
(13th century - nowadays)
The small republic of San Marino, south of Rimini, has been free since the 13th century. In the 15th century, it gave itself a Grand Council of sixty members recruited from the nobility and the bourgeoisie. In the 19th century it was a bastion for revolutionaries and it placed itself under the protection of the new Italian kingdom from 1862, which respected its independence. The members of the Grand Council are elected for four years by universal suffrage (introduced in 1909); two of them exercise executive power as captains-regent for six months.
