Childéric Ier, mort en 482, fut Roi des francs saliens à partir de 457 ou 458. Il est le père de Clovis Ier. Il est le premier roi de la dynastie des Mérovingiens dont l'existence est attestée.
Childéric signifie « Puissant à la guerre », Hilde-Rik en vieux francique. C'est le 4ème roi de la « Première race de France », selon l'expression de l'historien Antoine-Alexandre Barbier.
Grégoire de Tours le fait apparaître pour la première fois dans les sources en 45716. Cette année-là, Childéric, qui déshonorait les femmes de ses sujets, attira à lui la colère de son peuple qui le détrôna. Il se réfugia en Thuringe pendant huit ans, probablement à partir de 451. Une fois auprès du roi Basin, il séduisit la femme de son hôte, Basine, qu'il ramena avec lui dans sa province une fois le calme revenu. Les Francs le réclamaient à nouveau sur le trône. Le roi épousa Basine. De ce mariage naquit Clovis Ier 1.
Cette partie du récit de Grégoire de Tours semble s'apparenter cependant aux récits populaires et légendaires qu'il mêle à ses récits. L'interpréter de manière historique est délicat, même s'il existait un roi Basin en Thuringe à cette époque, et que la tradition donne à la mère de Clovis le nom de Basine.
Childéric est un personnage d'envergure : non seulement il prend la maîtrise d'une province romaine, mais il prend part à des combats impliquant d'autres forces romaines loin de ses bases. Il participe ainsi au jeu politique de Rome, à travers ses batailles en Gaule, voire en Italie. Il œuvre certainement aux côtés de l'autre autorité romaine du nord de la Gaule, le général Ægidius.
Childéric et Ægidius, accompagné par les Francs Saliens, secourent Majorien vers 458, ce qui contribue à renforcer les relations franco-romaines du nord de la Gaule. Childéric et ses Francs réussissent également à expulser les Burgondes de la ville de Lyon pour rejoindre Ægidius à Arles après que Majorien soit reconnu empereur.

METALLIC SERIES OF THE KINGS OF FRANCE
This series was engraved by Thomas Bernard and is interrupted, for this author, with the token of Louis XIV. The following tokens are engraved by Nicolas Gatteaux for Louis XV, Duvivier for Louis XVI, Puymaurin and Gayrard for Louis XVII, Puymaurin and Depaulis for Louis XVIII. The series is often attributed to Jean Dassier on the faith of Forrer but he corrects his assertion in his volume VIII and confirms the archives of the Monnaie de Paris which specify that the series was commissioned by Monsieur de Launay. There are different issues, in copper or brass, of varying weights but consistent by series, the reverse dies are sometimes varied. The classification of kings is done according to ancient usage, in three successive races. We note the existence of a very rare token explaining the abbreviations that we have only seen in a brass series. The packaging of this series was in a wooden tube. It is of course very difficult to reconstruct it and it should be noted that the different tokens have very different rarities, having probably been bought piecemeal by the public, favoring the good kings. There is at least one series in silver, possibly apocryphal, completed up to Napoleon III with tokens for all successive regimes, including the Revolution and Napoleon I, see MONNAIES 28, n° 1395.
