Oscar I, born July 4, 1799 in Paris and died July 8, 1859 in Stockholm, was king of Sweden and Norway from 1844 until his death. The only son of Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte (Charles XIV), he was the first ruler of the Bernadotte house to understand and speak Swedish. He played an important role in rooting this new dynasty in Scandinavia..
