THRACE - THRACIAN ISLANDS - LEMNOS - HEPHAISTIA
(4th - 3rd century BC)
Located in the Aegean Sea, Lemnos, populated by a Thracian tribe, the Pelasgians, the island was occupied by Darius I in 511 BC. Miltiades of Athens seized it in 499 BC, but it fell under Persian domination until the victories of Plataea and Mycales (479 BC). It then joined the Delian league until the fall of Athens in 404 BC before coming under Spartan rule. Returned to Athens after 392 BC, which installed a cleruchy (colony) there until 276/271 when the island was occupied by the Macedonians. Also disputed by the Seleucids, it was returned to the Athenians at the end of the last Macedonian war in 167 BC..
