Très beau denier, particulièrement complet, sur un flan large et un peu irrégulier. Frappe vigoureuse avec des formes bien nettes des deux cotés, mais avec une patine grise peu photogénique, avec des zones plus sombres

Ce type est rare et cet exemplaire est particulièrement net et complet. T. Abramson reprend dans son ouvrage l’hypothèse que le type de revers soit une illustration du verset du Deutéronome 32:11 “Tout comme un aigle excite son nid, plane sur ses oisillons, déploie ses ailes, les prend, les porte sur ses pennes”. Cette référence biblique est vraisemblable, mais les monnaies gauloises sont aussi une grande source d’inspiration pour le monnayage anglo-saxon et le type à l’aigle et l’aiglon y est particulièrement bien attesté !.

This biblical reference is likely, but Gallic coins are also a great source of inspiration for Anglo-Saxon coinage and the type with the eagle and the eaglet is particularly well attested there!

(7th - 8th centuries)
If the minting of these coins is to be located at the beginning of the 8th century, in Great Britain, it is not exceptional to find them in Gaul. They are often confused with Merovingian silver coins (cf. MONNAIES XIX, n° 503, sceattas c. 680-710, classified in Merovingian denier of Laon). During the 8th century, the style of these pieces is more and more degenerated, they are often in ridge or filled. These coins disappeared from circulation in the second half of the 8th century.
