Sous Louis XIV, en 1701, commence une guerre qui dura pendant 13 ans. Pendant cette période, la France subit de nombreuses invasions et à cela s’ajoute le terrible hiver de 1709, qui réduisit le pays à la famine. Denain est dominée par les Hollandais et par les troupes des princes Allemands. L’armée ennemie recevait son ravitaillement par l’Escaut mais Valenciennes et Condé étant toujours françaises, elle devait se rendre à Marchiennes pour récupérer le ravitaillement. L’armée française, commandée par le maréchal Villars libéra, dans la nuit du 23 au 24 juillet 1712, toutes les villes prises par le prince Eugène..

The story found on the town's website: The Battle of Denain: July 24, 1712 Under Louis XIV, in 1701, a war began that lasted for 13 years. During this period, France suffered numerous invasions and to this was added the terrible winter of 1709, which reduced the country to famine. Denain was dominated by the Dutch and by the troops of the German princes. The enemy army received its supplies via the Scheldt, but since Valenciennes and Condé were still French, it had to go to Marchiennes to recover the supplies. The French army, commanded by Marshal Villars, liberated, during the night of July 23 to 24, 1712, all the towns taken by Prince Eugene.

ARTILLERY
Before Louvois, the artillery was entrusted to civilian contractors who provided the men and equipment for each gun in battery for a given price. It came under a grand master of the artillery, a charge created under Charles VII, which belonged to Sully from 1599 to 1610 or to the Duke of Meilleraye under Richelieu. With Louvois, the artillery became an integral part of the army and was protected by the regiment of the king's riflemen. Ranks in the artillery were more accessible to commoners than in other regiments, advancement was given on merits and talents. Until the 18th century, the equipment left much to be desired with different calibers, different carriages and different wheels. The standardization and modernity of artillery will owe much to J.-B. de Gribeauval, Inspector General of Artillery since 1776. At the end of the 18th century, French artillery will be the first in Europe and this superiority will explain the victories of the Revolution.
