Philippe V (19/12/1683-9/07/1746) est le second fils de Louis, le Grand Dauphin, et de Marie-Anne de Bavière, donc le petit-fils de Louis XIV et le frère des ducs de Bourgogne et de Berry. Il est d'abord duc d'Anjou. À la mort de Charles II d'Espagne en 1700, il fut désigné comme roi par testament. Il met treize ans à conquérir son royaume, ayant comme compétiteur Charles III de Habsbourg (futur Charles VI d'Autriche). Il est l'ancêtre des Bourbons d'Espagne qui règnent encore aujourd'hui. En devenant roi d'Espagne et des Indes, il avait renoncé à toute prétention sur le trône de France. Il ne fut reconnu roi qu'au traité d'Utrecht en 1713. Il perdait les Pays-Bas qui revenaient à la branche autrichienne des Habsbourgs.

On becoming king of Spain and the Indies, he had renounced all claim to the throne of France. He was not recognized as king until the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713. He lost the Netherlands which returned to the Austrian branch of the Habsburgs
