Au début du XVIIIe siècle, l'île de la Saulzaie de Nantes est reliée à la ville par un pont en bois, le pont de la Poissonnerie. Occupée par des marins, des poissonniers, des aubergistes, elle est située hors des remparts de la ville et attise la convoitise de nombreux spéculateurs.
Gérard Mellier, maire de Nantes, décide de l’aménager et en 1721, un arrêt du conseil du roi concède à la ville l'île de la Saulzaie, moyennant une redevance annuelle de 10 livres. Un nouveau quartier est créé sur les plans de l’ingénieur Jacques Goubert. Pour financer les travaux, une compagnie de 24 négociants qui financera la construction des quais et des maisons est constituée.
L'intendant de Bretagne, Feydeau de Brou soutient le projet et donne son nom à l'île. Les sociétaires sont les plus importants négociants-armateurs nantais. Paul-Esprit Feydeau de Brou (1682-1767) est le fils de Denis Feydeau, président au Grand Conseil. Lui-même est conseiller au Parlement de Paris en 1705, maître des requêtes en 1710, intendant d’Alençon en 1713 puis de Bretagne en 1715. Il devient intendant d’Alsace en 1728, puis de Paris en 1742, il est ensuite conseiller au Conseil royal des Finances puis au Conseil des Dépêches et, consécration de sa carrière, garde des sceaux de France à compter du 27 septembre 1762.

BRITTANY (STATES OF...)
Brittany was, of all the French provinces, the one where the monarchy best respected local privileges and particularities..
