Très bel exemplaire sur un flan très large, légèrement éclaté à cinq heures. Infimes petits coups sur la tranche. A été légèrement nettoyé / Revers de style exceptionnel de la période classique. Sujet pratiquement complet avec un petit manque de métal sur le pied de Iokaste

Mêmes coins que l’exemplaire de la collection Warren (Boston, n° 201). Notre exemplaire ne semble pas présenter la cassure de coin caractéristique du coin (A/ 7). En revanche le coin de revers (R/ 12) est bien le nôtre. Semble plus rare que ne le laissent supposer les ouvrages généraux.
Same dies as the example in the Warren Collection (Boston, no. 201). Our example does not appear to have the characteristic die break of the die (A/ 7). On the other hand, the reverse die (R/ 12) is indeed ours. Seems rarer than general works suggest

BRUTTIUM - REGGIO
(466-415 BC)
Rhegium (Rhegion), the last city of the Italian boot on the continent, located on the Strait of Messina opposite Sicily, was founded around 720 BC by Chalcidian settlers. Anaxilas, tyrant of Rhegium, welcomed many Greeks from Asia Minor who fled the Persian danger in 494 BC. With the help of his new colonists, he conquered Zancle which was renamed Messina, occupied by many Messenians. Anaxilas won a victory at the Olympics of 480 BC and introduced a mule bege on the coinage of Rhegium and Messina before extending it to most of Sicily. The tyrant's son was driven out in 476 BC. Democracy was established in 461 BC and this date marks the beginning of coinage with the founding hero of the city, Iokaste. The city was destroyed in 387 BC by Dionysius of Syracuse.
