Corinth became one of the most important cities of Greece by controlling militarily and economically the Isthmus of the same name. Founded by the Aeolian, Corinth was placed between central Greece and the Peloponnese. It is the motherland of many cities, Corinthian colonies, including Syracuse, Corcyra, Ambracia, Anactorium and Leucas.
