Très rare drachme, d’une facture assez fruste, mais pourtant plus belle que les autres exemplaires publiés. Le flan est épais et un peu court, mais la tête est complète bien que le profil soit très faiblement gravé. Le revers est de frappe molle, mais complet. Fine patine grise

Cette drachme est d’un style bien particulier ; ce type de coiffure n’est pas représentés dans les monnaies de la série des “types associés ou dérivés” de Bridiers, dans le Nouvel Atlas.
L’étude de L. Villaronga sur ces drachmes et leurs imitations ne recense que trois monnaies comparables sur les plus de 1000 drachmes répertoriées. Ces trois monnaies (n° 782-784) sont issues des mêmes coins de droit et de revers que cet exemplaire. Elles appartiennent à la série 5-2, avec la tête à droite et le cheval à gauche (avec les pattes droites), qui a la particularité d’avoir ce bandeau dans la chevelure au droit. Les trois autres monnaies connues, provenant du trésor du Languedoc pèsent respectivement 4,75 g, 4,66 g et 4,70 grammes. Cet exemplaire serait très légèrement plus léger alors qu’il est plus beau (?).
Si l’exemplaire 782 (Languedoc n° 85) permet de deviner la présence d’un dauphin derrière la nuque, notre exemplaire est le seul bien centré pour présenter les deux dauphins (bien que de frappe très faible) devant le visage.
This drachma is of a very particular style; this type of hairstyle is not represented in the coins of the series of “associated or derived types” of Bridiers, in the New Atlas. L. Villaronga’s study on these drachmas and their imitations lists only three comparable coins out of the more than 1000 drachmas listed. These three coins (no. 782-784) come from the same obverse and reverse dies as this example. They belong to series 5-2, with the head on the right and the horse on the left (with straight legs), which has the particularity of having this headband in the hair on the obverse. The three other known coins, from the Languedoc treasure, weigh respectively 4.75 g, 4.66 g and 4.70 grams. This example would be very slightly lighter while it is more beautiful (?). If example 782 (Languedoc n° 85) allows us to guess the presence of a dolphin behind the neck, our example is the only one well centered to present the two dolphins (although very weakly struck) in front of the face

EMPORION and Celtic imitations (AMPURIAS)
(3rd - 2nd century BC)
The notion of people or tribe seems to disappear with regard to certain attributions when we examine the imitation coins of Emporion or Rhodè. If the prototypes are struck beyond the Pyrenees, the imitations were issued on both sides of the mountain range. The early death of R. Boudet (1958-1995) did not allow him to establish a corpus of these coins. The finds are not limited to Aquitaine, but are spread over the great West between the Loire and the Pyrenees, i.e. nearly a third of the territory of ancient Gaul. The finds of imitations of the drachma of Emporion, which seems to have had a wider distribution, are numerous and spread over the whole of the geographical area: from Charnizay in the Indre-et-Loire or Issoudun in the 'Indre to Ruscino in the Pyrénées-Orientales.
