In 1761, the Maratha military leader Haidar Ali (AH 1174-1197/ 1761-1782) became the de facto sultan of the Kingdom of Mysore, the maharajas of the Wodeyar dynasty not exercising actual power. His son Tipû Sultan proclaimed himself Sultan of Mysore in 1782. He led two wars against the English in 1780-1784 and 1790-1792. He had to face General Cornwallis, Commander-in-Chief from 1786, who defeated him in 1792. The Sultan of Mysore was assassinated in 1799 as he prepared to resume the fight against the English.
