Sur la quarantaine de drachmes celto-ligures que nous avons eu à la vente, cet exemplaire est le second avec ce type de légende qui diffère des monnaies plus classiques à la légende MASSA.
Deux monnaies de ce type sont conservées à Zurich (n° 1023 et 1041). La chevelure est traitée d’une façon bien particulière. La légende est lue VOIOIXVOX par K. Castelin est à peine visible, en bord de flan, comme sur le bga_265225 de CELTIC III (vendu 580€).
Of the forty or so Celto-Ligurian drachmas we had for sale, this is the second with this type of legend, which differs from the more classic coins with the MASSA legend. ITALY - TRANSPADANE AREA - CELTO-LIGURIANS
(3rd - 2nd century BC)
The Celto-Ligurians, with coins in the Lepontic alphabet, settled in the 6th or 5th century BC in Transpadane, which would later become Cisalpine Gaul. From the end of the 4th century BC, they were in contact with Rome. The Gauls crush the Romans on the Allia on July 18, 387 BC and Brennus takes Rome, (Væ victis!) after a long siege, despite the resistance of the Capitoline fortress (the geese consecrated to Juno Monere ( Moneta) warned the Romans of the danger).
