L’attribution de cette dénomination reste incertaine. Lindgren attribuait la pièce à l’atelier de Damas, s’appuyant sur H. Seyrig (Scripta Numismatica, p. 409-410, 8-12 = RN 1955 p. 105-106, pl. 1). Le style de notre exemplaire pourrait le rapprocher de monnaies de Simyra en Phénicie. Une attribution à Abgar II, souverain d’, contemporain de Pompée n’est pas à écarter.

PHOENICIA - SIMYRA
(2nd - 1st century BC)
SImyra was under Assyrian domination, the provincial capital before falling into oblivion and emerging in the 4th century BC, then belonging to the Perea of Arados to which it remained attached from the Hellenistic period to Roman rule.
